On Labor Day Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris decided to try out a different accent while visiting Michigan, a crucial swing state.
During a campaign appearance in Detroit, Michigan, Harris quipped, “You betta thank a union member for sick leave!” and as a result, she came under heavy criticism. “Gotta give a union member credit for paid time off! You should give a union member credit for your vacation time!”
But many could not help but note that throughout that spiel, Harris’s speech became accented.
“Oh my god. How in the world is she attempting to emulate an accent?” A user from X wrote.
Another person said, “Amazing how is she getting a pass for this crap.”
“I can attest that, in my 35 years of living in Michigan, nobody speaks like that.” Another person said, “Her accent is as fake as her campaign.”
Naturally, this is not the first time Harris has faced criticism for altering her accent according to the region of the nation she is campaigning in. In July, when running for office in Georgia, Harris adopted a phony southern accent, which made many people think of President Hillary Clinton’s twice-failed attempts to do the same.
She had used an accent when giving a speech in Detroit back in August.
“One thing unites us all: we enjoy pushing ourselves. Hard labor yields good results. Harris stated at the time, “Hard work is good work,” with a noticeable twang in her voice.

Notably, Harris wore headphones on Monday when she boarded her flight to Detroit, a move that many believe was intentional to keep her quiet in front of the media.
