During his speech on St. Patrick’s Day, President Joe Biden over the weekend urged that the White House audience clap.
While honoring the Irish diaspora in the United States, Biden made his comments on Sunday alongside Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar.
With his remarks, Biden acknowledged the “bonds of our relationship” that unite millions of Irish Americans with the American people. “We honor the bond between our two countries, which has influenced our history, bolstered our current situation, and illuminated our path forward.”
According to Biden, the two countries have shared principles, are continuing to strengthen their economic connections, and celebrated 100 years of diplomatic relations this year.
Among the top 10 investors in the US economy is Ireland, according to Biden. In the face of oppression, our nations boldly defend freedom. In the face of Russia’s savage attack on Ukraine, we stand united and opposed. If you’d like, you can applaud for it.
Biden lauded Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) statement criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their meeting with Varadkar late last week.

According to Biden, Senator Schumer reached out to his staff—specifically, his senior staff—in order to schedule the speech. “I won’t go into detail about it, but I believe he did an excellent job of expressing the genuine worry that many Americans share,” Biden said in response.
