Imagine our nation’s capital—a city meant to symbolize freedom, justice, and American exceptionalism—finally free from the shackles of rampant crime and ineffective governance. President Trump has boldly raised the possibility of a federal takeover of Washington, D.C., and it’s about time we seriously consider the merits behind this powerful suggestion.
During a recent cabinet meeting, President Trump didn’t mince words. Addressing the alarming rise in crime, Trump confidently stated, “We could run D.C. We’re looking at D.C. We don’t want crime in D.C. We want the city to run well.” The President knows that the federal government has both the authority and the ability to restore law and order to our capital city—and he isn’t afraid to say it.
Trump’s vision isn’t just empty rhetoric—it’s grounded in constitutional authority. As Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) pointed out, it’s high time to repeal D.C.’s disastrous home-rule experiment and return lawmaking authority to Congress, exactly as our Founding Fathers intended. Lee is leading the way with the BOWSER Act, co-sponsored by Representative Andy Ogles (R-TN), which would strip away the failed local governance and restore Congressional oversight. It’s a smart move, and one that could finally put an end to decades of mismanagement and neglect.
Crime statistics underscore the urgency of Trump’s proposal. According to WalletHub’s 2025 rankings of America’s safest cities, Washington, D.C., languishes at a disgraceful 172nd out of 182 cities. Our capital—the city that represents American strength on the world stage—is now an embarrassing showcase of crime and dysfunction. While burglaries have dropped slightly, motor vehicle thefts continue to rise. This is unacceptable, and decisive federal action is long overdue.
President Trump’s Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles, has been working closely with Mayor Muriel Bowser, aiming to improve the situation locally. But let’s be honest—incremental improvements aren’t enough. Trump himself emphasized, “We would run it so good, it would be run so proper. We’d get the best person to run it; the crime would be down to a minimal—it would be much less.” Why should we settle for mediocrity from local politicians beholden to special interests and progressive ideologues when we could have excellence from federal leadership that’s committed to America First values?
Critics may howl about federal overreach, but let’s remember the facts. Article I, Section 8, Clause 17 of the U.S. Constitution explicitly grants Congress authority over the District of Columbia. This isn’t some radical idea—it’s a fundamental power clearly enumerated in our nation’s founding documents. Trump’s proposal isn’t an attack on democracy; it’s a restoration of constitutional governance and common-sense leadership.
Moreover, this isn’t Trump’s first time advocating for strong federal intervention. Earlier this year, Trump declared that the federal government “should govern the District of Columbia,” emphasizing the need to “run it strong, run it with law and order, and make it absolutely flawless.” It’s a vision of a capital city that doesn’t embarrass America but inspires pride and respect globally.
The choice before us is clear: continue with the failing status quo or embrace a bold new direction under federal authority. President Trump’s determination to clean up Washington, D.C., is exactly the sort of decisive leadership our country needs right now. The residents of D.C.—and indeed, every American—deserve a capital city that reflects the greatness of our nation, not the incompetence of local progressive leadership.
Let’s rally behind Trump’s courageous proposal, support Senator Lee’s BOWSER Act, and finally restore law, order, and pride to the American capital. The time for half-measures is over; the time for bold, conservative action is now.
