Former President Donald Trump would turn into a tyrant if he wins the 2024 election, according to NBC presidential historian Michael Beschloss, who was speaking to MSNBC anchor Jonathan Capehart.
Beschloss spoke out following a New York City jury’s verdict that found Trump guilty of misusing campaign funds in connection with his business dealings with Stormy Daniels. Trump has asserted his innocence, claiming that the trial and allegations stemmed from political motives.

Jonathan, do you believe that the majority of Americans will choose chaos and dictatorship in the election? Not in my opinion.
“The former president is running for president, but we have found him guilty on 34 criminal counts.” What we are seeing has no historical parallel, either in law or politics. However, what is the difference between this and other unstable periods in our past? Capehart enquired.
“I think the choice is actually quite clear.” We have an individual with a criminal record. However, in the past few decades, a convicted felon would have declared, “I served my time,” if they had run, say, for alderman, which was probably as high as they would have aspired to. My lesson was learned. I regret it. Nobody will be more committed to upholding our legal system than I am. “Rather, the expected Republican nominee for this year gave that tirade at the bottom of the brass elevator at Trump Tower yesterday, as both you and I witnessed,” Beschloss clarified.
Thus, when someone simultaneously promises to be your dictator for a day, you can be sure that it won’t last that long. If it starts, it will last for four years, if not for his lifetime,” Beschloss said. Simultaneously, he declares that he would destroy the American ideal of the rule of law, which maintains peace and guarantees justice when it benefits every American. You simultaneously have anarchy and dictatorship. Jonathan, do you believe that the majority of Americans will choose chaos and dictatorship in the election? Not in my opinion.
Capehart expressed agreement with Beschloss’s evaluation.
One common response on the internet to Beschloss’s remarks is that Trump did not turn into a despot during his first time in office.
