Around 100 cars gathered outside of an Oklahoma high school to protest the fact that students were not allowed to fly the American flag.
Residents of Edmond met at Edmond North High School to protest the controversial flag rule in Edmond Public Schools (EPS), according to Fox 25.
EPS said that students can’t bring or show any kind of flag on school in order to keep things safe and free of distractions.
A video from the school shows a line of cars with big American flags on them.
KOCO reported Thursday that student Caleb Horst said he was told on Wednesday that he couldn’t fly his American flag on the back of his truck.
He told the source, “I have never really had an issue before, and it is our First Amendment, so it is kind of hard for them to break those rights.”
“At the end of the day, we’re all Americans and united under that flag, so not much can split us,” he said.
Saying, “No school in Oklahoma should tell kids they can’t wave an American flag,” Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters slammed the rule in a video up on Monday.
“People have died for that flag, for kids to be able to hold the flag, wave the flag, and be proud of the American flag. Right now, my department is working on rules that will make sure that no kid is ever picked on because they have an American flag on their backpack. Also, that our schools will teach people to be patriotic. We want our young people to love and be proud of their country. We will continue to help our young people learn as much as they can about American past and the country, and we will encourage them to be proud of our country.”
Walters wrote on Thursday that “EPS has a history of putting woke causes ahead of our freedoms. We’ll look into it, and I’ll do something.”
A Facebook group that planned the gathering said its goal was to raise awareness about patriotism and what the American flag means, according to a Fox 25 story.
The X account Libs of TikTok says that a Vietnam soldier called Eddie Beesley also showed his support by going to the rally.
KOCO talked to an Army soldier who is also supporting the protest and said he hopes other people will join the young people. He doesn’t think the flag should be limited by rules about what can and can’t be done on college grounds.
“We fought for the American flag, so it’s different,” he said.
The news source said that EPS said it shows the American flag in classes and outside of buildings in a right and respectful way.
