Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur, stated that Twitter had intervened in elections prior to his purchase and vowed that it would be more focused under his guidance.
Musk made the assertion on Wednesday in response to an article that cited Twitter’s former head of trust and safety as claiming that the platform would not be safer once he bought the company.
“Many long-time Twitter users know that the plain reality is that Twitter has failed in safety and trust for a very long time and has intervened in elections,” Musk tweeted.
“Twitter 2.0 will indeed be a lot more effective, open, and even-handed,” he went on to say.
Musk’s statement backs up claims made against the social media platform for years by many on the right that Twitter was unfairly discriminating in the enforcement of its rules of service.
The tweet received more than 60k likes.
Musk previously stated that he will share some of the internal conversations that resulted in the decision to delete the New York Post report concerning Hunter Biden’s laptop just prior to the 2020 election. Officials in the establishment media claimed that halting the distribution of the news was warranted due to doubts about its authenticity, but others accused them of attempting to safeguard then-candidate Joe Biden, who went on to become the president.
“This is vital to rebuilding public trust,” Musk said of releasing internal Twitter papers.
According to a Twitter employee, the news was prohibited from spreading due to violations of the platform’s policy on hacked information.
“In accordance with our Hacked Materials Policy and our methodology to banning URLs, we are taking action on Twitter to prohibit any links to or photos of the information in question,” the company told the Post.
Musk paid $44 billion for the popular social media network following months of legal fighting.
