But here is the clincher: Lightfoot is in a class by herself.
As the blood-splattered streets of Chicago’s Southside continue, the embattled mayor has suggested a city law to grant herself a substantial raise. No, seriously. Have I mentioned that Lightfoot’s annual compensation is currently $216,210?
According to Fox News, the catch-all “management law” announced at Wednesday’s City Council session and linked to Lightfoot’s $16.4 billion budget proposed linking the mayor’s future income to the inflation rate or 5%, whichever is less. A 5% raise would bring the mayor’s wages up by $10,810 to $227,020.
The adjustment would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2024, with the caveat that Lightfoot and future mayors would be able to opt out of accepting the increase. Take care not to hold your breath.
Meanwhile, Chicago’s violent crime rate has grown by 37% over the same period in 2021, while auto thefts have increased by 74%. So, why not offer Lightfoot a substantial raise, with more to come? Meanwhile, Democrats, being Democrats, continue to disregard one deadly weekend after another on Chicago’s bloody Southside.
According to Fox, several firms, including Tyson Foods and the McDonald’s Corporation, have left Chicago for greener pastures. During a speech in Sept, the CEO of the fast-food behemoth, Chris Kempczinski, lambasted the city:
“We experience violent crimes in our restaurants… we have homelessness concerns in the restaurants… we have drug overdoses in the restaurants… so we witness what’s occurring in society at large in our restaurants every single day.”
