Democrats Say They Would Accept An Economic Depression

Representative Debbie Dingell (D-MI) said on the latest episode of NBC’s “MTP Now” that she may choose not to support the bill that would raise the debt ceiling because of her “duty regarding protecting the environment” and the bill’s allowing reform language, even though doing so could lead to a recession or even a depression.

“We’ve been informed that we may breach our debt cap by this weekend,” Dingell stated. “We cannot let it occur. That would have a genuine effect on actual people. And the potential for both a recession and a depression is real. And I am aware that I feel that obligation.”

“Permitting reform,” she said, “which, quite honestly, for me, the more I read it — everyone concentrates on transmission being absent in there and Senator Manchin’s (D-WV) initiative — I’m afraid wording in there may gut the very core of NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act). I am aware that it needs to be updated. It was written by my spouse 50 years ago.”

Dingell said, “We can’t default. I am aware that we cannot go into default. That’s a pretty important obligation, and I’ve been quite clear about that for months. But what part do I play in maintaining our environment’s integrity?” Additionally, “I can hear my husband telling me, Deborah, do not let them gut NEPA.”
