Arizona law enforcement would be able to arrest illegal aliens under a Republican-backed measure, but Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) has vetoed it.
The “Arizona Border Invasion Act,” which gives law enforcement officials throughout the state the authority to detain illegal aliens who have crossed the border into Mexico, was the subject of Hobbs’ first veto of this year when she declined to sign it into law.
Police in Arizona have the authority to punish undocumented immigrants who enter the state illegally with a misdemeanor in their first arrest and a felony in their subsequent arrests.
Hobbs said that the law would be “damaging for… companies” that recruit illegal aliens to fill jobs in Arizona and that it “does not safeguard the border.”
With her rejection of the measure, state senator Janae Shamp (R) told AZ Central that “the legislature completed its duty to protect our residents, but Gov. Hobbs did not follow.”
“As Biden’s collaborator, Hobbs is wreaking havoc in our state by vetoing the Arizona Border Invasion Act, which is just one more example of the turmoil he is causing.” Safe neighborhoods are what Arizonans deserve and want.”
The Tuscon border sector in Arizona has seen almost a quarter of a million illegal immigrant encounters between October 2023 and January 2030.
