The idea that the FBI is a “leftist cabal trying to get the Republicans” is absurd, according to former FBI Director James Comey, who spoke on CNN’s “CNN This Morning” this week.
The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis (R), said on Fox News that “Republican administrations have accepted the canard claiming the DOJ and FBI are, quote, ‘independent.’ They are not autonomous organizations. They belong to the executive branch. They have to answer to the American president who was duly elected. Therefore, it is your duty as president to take part in keeping those agencies responsible.”
“Historically, up until the last few years, those on the left have been critical of the FBI,” co-host Poppy Harlow remarked. “Prior to the party leaving you, you state you were a Republican for the most of your life. What makes you believe that so many Republicans are now against the FBI?”
“I believe it’s mainly because Donald Trump along with those close to him have perceived the FBI as a threat, and they have taken a blowtorch to attempt to tear down that threat,” Comey said. It’s truly too bad. It’s just insane to think that the FBI is some type of lefty conspiracy seeking to harm Republicans. It demonstrates just how insane our times are.”
“The FBI will be okay in the long term,” he said. “The MAGA worldview and the Donald Trump fever will fade away, but it has somehow become a wacky article of faith believing the FBI is out to harm Republicans. People would have thought it was crazy if you had asked them 20 years ago whether that would ever be the charge. Although absurd, it will pass.”
