On Wednesday, President Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will speak on infrastructure in Kentucky.
Even as establishment Republicans take control of the House, the president will use his presence with McConnell to demonstrate his willingness to work across party lines.
McConnell and establishment Republicans joined with Dems and the White House to pass the huge $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill in 2021, which Biden and McConnell are anticipated to celebrate.
A total of 19 Senate Republicans supported the measure.
The readiness of McConnell to collaborate with Biden to spend more than a trillion dollars on infrastructure after largely stymieing Trump’s efforts on the matter astonished supporters of the previous president Donald Trump.
McConnell and Senate Republicans came under fire from Trump for supporting the bloated measure, of which just a small portion was allocated to traditional infrastructure projects like bridges, roads, airports, and ports.
“Why did Old Crow Mitch McConnell support a poor Democratic Socialist Infrastructure package and get others in his Party to do the same, but was unable to secure support for a fantastic Infrastructure Plan that I and the Republican Party had proposed?” In a statement in November, Trump vented.
But McConnell stood by the job he did with Biden.
After the Democratic-led effort passed the Senate, McConnell stated, “I’m glad of my vote,” adding that the package was “very excellent for my state.”
