In excerpts from an interview conducted last Thursday and made public this week, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that the Biden administration has “done an extraordinary job to deal with an unprecedented level of migration,” adding that the unprecedented levels of migration are caused by other factors. The interview took place with CBS News Immigration and Politics Reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez.
Mayorkas said, “That is incorrect,” in response to claims that the Biden administration had pushed people to travel to the border. The degree of migration across the hemisphere is unprecedented if we look at it in the context of migration, not only at our southern border. Additionally, there has never been as much movement or displacement globally as there has been since World War II. I estimate that there are 73 million displaced individuals worldwide. People flee their home nations for well-known causes, such as great poverty, violent crime, harsh weather, corruption, or repression by authoritarian governments.
Additionally, he remarked, “Camillo, we have handled an unprecedented amount of migration with great skill. In actuality, some people do attempt to manipulate the system. And we address it appropriately. The bipartisan measure, which unfortunately failed today for the second time, would have given us additional tools to deal with those who try to manipulate the system.
