President Biden has done a lot, but Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) asserted on CNN’s “State of the Union” this week that 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and the healthcare system is a “total disaster.”
Sanders said, “The president has a lot of reasons to be proud of what we’ve done in the past three years. For example, unemployment has become very, very low. We have cut down on prices. We are putting our money into clean energy. We’re fixing up our buildings and roads. We’ve come a long way in the past few years, but 60% of our people still live from paycheck to paycheck. There are huge differences in wealth as well as income. Our system of health care is a total mess. 85 million people don’t have insurance or don’t have enough insurance, while insurance companies make big gains. The price of pharmaceutical drugs, like those used to treat depression, is through the roof.”
He went on, “So, I think the president should talk about how good his record is. We have to keep fighting for women’s right’s to be in charge of their own bodies. But we have to face the truth of life right now. In 1936, that is what Roosevelt had done. And that is to realize that there is a lot of greed in all aspects of society, especially in business. People who work are having a hard time, while the rich are getting richer.”
The minimum wage must be raised to a livable wage, and Sanders said, “We have to make it plain that we are willing to stand with those people and create a health care system that’s beneficial for everyone. So, I believe that was yesterday’s lesson.”
